Introduction
The Seigneury of Joscelin
In 1144, the county of Edessa, first of the Latin principalities of Outremer, was conquered by the Turkish Atabeg Imad ad-Din Zengi. Edessa's prince, Joscelin II, fought to regain his principality until his death in 1159. His son Joscelin III grew up in exile in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem where he served as seneschal and where he came to play important diplomatic, military, and political roles. In thanks for her service to the kingdom, and in order to compensate him for the loss of his patrimony, succeeding kings of Jerusalem rewarded Joscelin III with a collection of lands and rights in the kingdom which contemporaries knew as the Segnory dou fié dou conte Joscelin or the "Seigneury of the fiefs of Count Joscelin". Modern historians call it simply the "Seigneury of Joscelin".
When Joscelin III died without male heirs some time before 1200, his Seigneury passed through his daughter Agnes to her second husband the German nobleman Count Otto of Henneberg, who in turn granted the lands to the Teutonic Order in 1220.

The Charters
Remarkably, and fortunately for historians of the Crusader States, when the Teutonic Order took possession of the Seigneury of Joscelin, they obtained not only the territories, but also an archive of documents related them. The Teutonic Knights duly copied these documents into their general cartulary, a copy of which (made in 1243 or 1244) survives to this day in Berlin. These documents reflect the only surviving example of an archive from the Latin East that was apparently maintained by a lay lord (as opposed to a monastery or church). Because they originated with gifts made by the rulers of Jerusalem to Joscelin, they also present us with crucial evidence of how the kings and queens of Jerusalem treated their vassals. Along the way, we are treated to tantalizing references to literacy and administration and to the people and places of the Latin Kingdom in the latter years of the twelfth century.

Translation
“As a translator, I have tried to stay as true to the original Latin of the charters as possible. The charters present legal language that both is complicated and often difficult to clearly translate. The complexity of these documents is evident; I believe it to be important to leave the Latin as close as possible to the original to convey this complexity . Decisions were made concerning how best to translate certain verbs and phrases and keep this consistent throughout (e.g. Let it be known to all, so to those present and future…).” -Michael Lipari

So therefore let the whole charter of this concession and me confirmation remain whole, I have ordered the present charter to be protected by the below-written witnesses and my seal.
